The Greensboro College women’s soccer team ended its recent season with a 5-8-3 record. The Pride recorded three fewer losses in 2000 than in the previous year, and posted an impressive 4-2-2 mark at Pride Field.

GC got stellar play from two freshmen strikers, Kim Maher and Candice Gardner. Maher scored 16 goals during the year, setting a new Greensboro mark. Gardner was The Pride’s second leading scorer with nine goals.

Greensboro’s success, however, cannot be judged only by statistics. While the record book will show moderate improvement, The Pride level of play reached a  much higher plateau in 2000.

First-year Head Coach Doug Shank had the women in green and white passing, defending,  hustling  and  playing  the  best women’s soccer in recent memory.

The  Pride  is  expected  to  return its entire roster in 2001. GC has a strong foundation with Gardner, Maher and midfielder Valerie Bailey. Both Bailey and Maher earned second team Dixie Conference honors.

In addition, Greensboro will expect contributions from Kim Humphrey, Andrea Gabrelcik, Kellie Plucinski, Adrian Buttino and Krystal Luebke next season.

“We have only scratched the surface of what we can do,” Shank said. “I want us to be competing for a conference title every season.”
