Fall Sports Preview (Conference Championship Week)

The fall sports season is coming to a conclusion which means it is time for the USA South conference tournament.  The Pride will compete for USA South Championships in three sports this week: volleyball, men’s soccer, and women’s soccer.

Volleyball

Jean Lojko’s volleyball team finished the season with a 10-23 record, 5-13 in USA South play.  Their record was good enough for eighth in the conference and they will play the number nine seed Mary Baldwin Fighting Squirrels in first round action.  The match is tabbed for 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 1, at Christopher Newport University.  The winner of the match will play the top-seeded and nationally-ranked Captains at 7:00 p.m.

The Pride have defeated Mary Baldwin twice this season, winning 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-22) at Mary Baldwin on September 17 and 3-2 (25-21, 17-25, 15-25, 25-18, 15-7) at Hanes Gymnasium on October 22nd.  Freshman Liz Widenhouse put together two excellent matches against the Squirrels this season, tallying 30 kills, 22 digs, and six serving aces.  Sophomore Dana Sandknop dished out 77 assists and recorded 14 digs, while fellow sophomore Siara Cates chipped in 37 digs.  Danielle Simpson and Morgan Hooks each recorded double-digit kills as well, with 14 and 20 respectively, and Simpson had 37 digs as well.

Women’s Soccer

Ian Spooner’s soccer team finished the season with a record of 10-5-1, 6-2-1 in USA South play.  Their record placed them fourth in the conference and they will play the fifth seed Ferrum in first round action.  The match is tabbed for 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 1, at Pride Field.  The winner of the first round game will advance to the semi-finals on Friday, November 4, in Martinsville, Virginia, to play the winner of Christopher Newport-North Carolina Wesleyan.

The Pride lost their first conference game of the season to Ferrum at Pride Field on October 7.  After a first half that was dominated by The Pride, they finally found the breakthrough in the 64th minute.  Sophomore Tiffany Walters provided an excellent pass to Mary Randolph who fired the shot past the goalkeeper for the game’s first lead.  Ferrum fired back quickly through as LaQuinta Garrett and Kara Pegram found the back of the net in the 69th and 78th minutes.

Greensboro held a 25-13 advantage in shots and a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks for the game.  Ferrum goalkeeper Caitlyn Deaton recorded 12 saves, while Shireen Unvala stopped two shots.

Men’s Soccer

John Trice’s first season as head coach of the men’s soccer team saw a drastic improvement over last year.  The Pride went 3-14-2 last season and failed to win in conference play, but managed a final record this season of 4-4-5, and 3-3 in conference play.  Their nine points in conference play earned them the fourth seed going into the conference tournament. Greensboro will open up the tournament by hosting Averett on Tuesday, November 1, at 2:30 p.m.  The winner of Tuesday’s contest will advance to the semi-finals on Friday, November 4, in Martinsville, Virginia, to take on number one seed Christopher Newport.

The Pride squared off with the Cougars once this season, winning in thrilling overtime fashion on October 20 at Averett.  Greensboro rallied from deficits of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2, finally knotting the game with a late goal in regulation before coming out victorious just 3:28 into the first overtime session.  Colby Johnson and Joe Peluso led the attack with two goals apiece.

The Pride dominated the stat sheet, holding a 23-20 advantage in total shots, including a 15-9 margin in shots on goal.  Greensboro also attempted seven corner kicks compared to five for Averett.
