Men's and Women's Tennis Swept by Guilford
The Pride men's and women's tennis teams were defeated by cross-town rival Guilford on Tuesday. The match, which was originally scheduled for Sunday but moved to Tuesday because of weather, was the second of the spring for both the men and women.
On the women's side, the 9-0 decision was closer than the final indicated. Meredith Kelly and Brittany Cates each forced an extra set in singles competition, while doubles team of Danielle Simpson and Diana Bravo forced Dominique Crespo and Adelaide Ayres to the limit. Simpson also lost a hard fought singles proset (darkness) to Meredith Schoffer.
Kelly was defeated by Haley Andrews at number one 4-6 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (10-5); Cates fell to Kim Kleimeier at two 6-0, 2-6, 1-0 (10-3); and the number three doubles pair of Simpson/Bravo came up short to Crespo/Ayres 9-7.
The men, meanwhile, were unable to improve to 2-0 on the season with an 8-0 loss to the Quakers. The number six singles match between The Pride's Jonathan Deming and Guilford's Ben Nelson was cut short due to darkness during a a tight 3-3 second set. In addition Greensboro's Chris Espihoza was forced to play an eight game proset with Mark Cheong.
The men, now 1-1 on the year, will be back in action on February 25 at Chowan. The women will travel to Emory & Henry on February 28 for their next match.
