Alex Cooke (High Point, NC/SW Guilford) and
Andrew Clark (Ottawa, Ont/Ashbury College) were presented the 2008-09 Fred Joseph Award, the highest athletic honor presented at Greensboro College. The presentation took place at halftime of Saturday's homecoming football game.
Alex Cooke: GC's Best Ever Swimmer
A native of High Point, NC and the daughter of Brad and Karen Cooke, the Southwest Guilford High School graduate entered her last year as already the most decorated swimmer in Greensboro College history.
Cooke then had a phenomenal senior campaign. She led the Pride to nine dual-meet wins—the most in program history. She was selected the Atlantic States regional swimmer of the year and led GC to a fifth place finish at the event, the best placing in 10 years.
Shortly thereafter, she became the first GC swimmer to be invited to the NCAA Division III championships. She did not disappoint at the event, held March 18-21 in Minneapolis, Minn.
Cooke set program records in all three events she entered. The senior clocked a record 57.39 in the prelims of the 100 back—where she was 13th best entering the finals. That swim earned Cooke a spot in the consolation championship and eventual All America status.
At the NCAAs, she also competed and set records in the 100 freestyle and the 50 Free. In the 100 free, she entered as the 53rd top competitor and finished 26th best.
Cooke leaves The Pride with nine individual records and is a member of all five GC-best relay teams.
A business major, she is completing her final semester at GC and will graduate in December.

Andrew Clark: Excels on Pitch and in the Classroom
The male recipient of the Joseph Award for 2008-09 is current men’s soccer team captain Andrew Clark.
A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada--and son of and David Clark and Marilyn Eustace--Andrew is the midst of his senior season and capping off a stellar four year career for The Pride men’s soccer team.
Clark has excelled both on and off the soccer pitch. In the classroom, Clark holds a 3.86 grade point average. He earned his third consecutive USA South All-Academic Team honor last season and was named a 2008 NCSAA/Adidas Academic All-American.
Previously, Clark was a member of USA South champion and NCAA Tournament teams in 2007 and 2007.
In the past year, however, Clark has truly collected some major awards. Clark received USA South First Team All-Conference and NSCAA All-South Region honors this past year. In addition, he was named the team’s most valuable player. Clark totaled 23 points on a team-high ten goals with three assists.
Andrew earned the Craven E. Williams Award which is the highest honor bestowed upon a rising senior Greensboro College student-athlete in April. Earlier this month, he was presented the 2008-09 Don Scalf Award—the most prestigious honor presented by the USA South Conference.
Clark volunteered his time for many organizations, including the Guilford United Futbol Club and the Bryan Family YMCA.
About the Joseph Award
In 1977, Mr. Fred Joseph, one of the co-founders of the athletics booster club, and his wife Cindy, Class of 1959, established the JOSEPH ATHLETIC AWARD to recognize each year the most outstanding student-athletes at Greensboro College. Tonight’s honorees are being recognized for their performances during the 2008-09 seasons. This award remains the highest distinction bestowed annually upon a Greensboro College student-athlete based strictly upon athletics excellence and achievement.
