Under first-year Head Coach Giovanni Vlahos, Greensboro College men's soccer was led by
Andrew Clark (Ottawa, Ont/Ashbury College). The senior closed his career with 55 points, ninth on the GC all-time list.
In the transition year, The Pride team went 4-11-2 in 2009. The team produced a number of highlights. The Pride won at cross-town rival Guilford College, 2-0, in a dominating performance. GC's other wins were over conference rival Ferrum and Shenandoah, and versus visiting Piedmont.
GC was dealt an early-season blow when goalkeeper
Mazi Heydary (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) was injured. While untested
Chad Adams (Yadkinville, NC/Forbush) and
Jacob Wolf (Swansboro, NC/Swansboro) performed admirably, Heydary was missed.
A total of four pride players collected All USA South honors; Clark,
Denis Geoffrey (Elon, NC/Western Alamance),
Ross Solomon (Swampscott, MA/Lawrence Academy) and
Jorge Campos Diaz (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill). Clark earned second team all conference honors, while Geoffrey and Solomon both received honorable mention. Diaz was also selected to the USA South sportsmanship team.
Clark, who recorded six points in 2009, ended a fantastic four year career with Pride soccer. He was again picked for the CoSIDA Academic All America District 3 second team. He excelled on and off the field throughout his career upholding a 3.86 grade point average while playing the role of captain for the team.
"Andrew really is the perfect example of the student-athlete," said Vlahos. "I expect that his example rubbed off on his teammates."
In addition to Clark, The Pride will miss the contributions of graduating senior
Taylor Kyle (Greensboro, NC/Smith).
Geoffrey led GC in scoring with 10 points (4 goals, 2 assists).
David Andreski (Wilkesboro, NC/Wilkes Central) tallied eight points. The future looks bright as freshmen
Richard Page (Winston-Salem, NC/R.J. Reynolds) and
Braxton Perkins (Winston-Salem, NC/Mount Tabor) scored seven and five points respectively.
"Certainly we were disappointed with our final record," said Vlahos. "We'll take some positives out of this year and build on it. I expect a our returnees to blossom and for newcomers to make a difference in 2010. Our goal is put Pride men's soccer back on track to again win championships."
