Giovanni Vlahos has been named head men’s soccer coach at Greensboro College, announced Pride Athletics Director Kim Strable. Vlahos spent the past year at USC Sumter--a junior college--as the head men’s and women’s coach of their first-year soccer programs.
"Coach Vlahos is a wonderful fit for Greensboro College who we think has the passion and drive to keep our men's soccer program among the best in the nation," said Strable.
In his first year with the Fire Ants, Coach Vlahos had three players from his men’s team and four from the women’s squad garner all region honors from the NJCAA's Region Ten.
Coach Vlahos was born in Athens, Greece but grew up in Livorno, Italy, a seaside town in the Tuscany region. He moved to the United States at the age of 15 and attended 71st Senior High School in Fayetteville, NC--where he was a three-time all state soccer player.
Vlahos was a scholarship soccer player at Wingate University for two years. He then transferred to the University of North Carolina Wilmington where he graduated in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in communication studies.
Giovanni then played one season for a second division team in Corfu Greece. The next year, he played for Panachaiki F.C in Patras which plays in the Greek Second Division.
Vlahos (pronounced vla-ho's) then returned to The United States and settled in California. He first led the junior varsity program at Mira Costa High School for two years before landing a head coach post at Laguna Beach High School. In two seasons with Laguna Beach, Vlahos’ team went to the Division 2 Southern California High School playoffs. He capped his high school coaching career by earning Pacific Coast League coach of the year honors.
In 2006 he returned to Greece as an assistant coach for Ionikos Diavaton, a professional soccer team competing in the Macedonian Football Union. He returned to the U.S. in 2007 and relocated to South Carolina. Vlahos accepted the position of head men’s and women’s soccer coach at the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie. He coached there for one season before launching newly established soccer programs at USC Sumter.
Vlahos is a U.S. citizen and in addition to English, Giovanni speaks Italian fluently. He also speaks conversational Greek and Spanish. He and his wife, Melissa, will soon relocate to the Triad. Melissa is a UNCW graduate and native of Burlington, NC.
