Baseball Opens Conference Season With Two Wins
The Pride swept the Methodist Monarchs to open conference play, winning Game 1 by a score of 4-2 and finishing the late game with a 6-4 victory. Greensboro starts perfect in conference play and has won six of their last seven games.
Greensboro got off to a good start in Game 1, with James Feldman coming across in the second and Michael Cobb scoring in the third after walking and stealing second. The Monarchs countered with two in the fourth, but the pitching of John Atkins kept The Pride in the game until the found their stroke at the plate.
Austin Catherina got things started for Greensboro in the seventh inning, singling just past a diving second baseman. Catherina scored on a Matthew Parker double to give The Pride a 3-2 lead and Steven Pfeiffer doubled to center, bringing in Parker. Atkins pitched a complete game on the mound to pick up his first win.
The Pride jumped out on top in the second inning of Game 2, with Pfieffer bringing in Parker for the second time on the day. Methodist would counter in the next inning and momentarily take a lead in the top of the fourth, but Greensboro wouldn't let them lead long.
Parker would reach base on a walk before advancing to second on a James Feldman single up the middle. Parker and Feldman then executed a double steal and Parker would score on a wild pitch to tie the game. Feldman would score to give Greensboro the lead as Seth Caison grounded out to short.
Methodist re-took the lead in the top of the sixth, but Greensboro countered immediately again. Feldman again shined for The Pride, shooting a ball through the gap with two outs. Pfeiffer then singled to right and Caison brought Feldman home with an infield hit to tie the game at four.
The Pride would wait until the bottom of the eighth to score the game winner and it was Caison and Feldman coming to the rescue again. Feldman singled up the middle, then advanced to third on a Pfeiffer single. Tony Folsum would run for Pfeiffer and steal second to place runners on second and third with two outs. Caison then doubled to bring home both runs and David Schilling closed out the ninth for the win.
Feldman had a monstrous second game, hitting three for three, stealing a base and scoring half The Pride's runs. Pfeiffer went two for four with an RBI, while Caison also hit two for four with four RBIs. Jacob Cadle struck out four in 4.1 innings of work and Schilling finished the game with 4.2 innings pitched and seven strike outs.
Greensboro will be back in action on March 3rd and 4th as they travel to Newport News to take on the nationally-ranked Captains of Christopher Newport.
