Dr. Randy Hunt enters his third year coaching the Greensboro
College football team in 2011.
In his first season, GC produced the most successful year in
program history. The Pride won four USA South Conference games,
matching the most in program history. Season highlights included
victories at Maryville and Ferrum for the first time, winning its
last three games, and garnering 11 USA South all-conference
awards.
Hunt, who serves as GC's position coach for running backs, was
named head football coach in November of 2008.
Dr. Hunt returned to coaching after distinguished service as an
administrator and instructor, most notably at Greensboro College.
In his lone season as a college head coach, he compiled a 6-3
record at Glenville State College, his alma mater. From 1990-91,
Hunt also served as the defensive coordinator under Rich Rodriguez,
former head coach at the University of Michigan and West Virginia
University. Additionally, he served alongside former Wake Forest
Defensive Coordinator and current Eastern Kentucky Head
Coach Dean Hood.
Hunt is the third head coach since GC began sponsoring football
in 1997. He follows Marion Kirby (1997-01) and Neal Mitchell
(2002-08).
Most recently, Hunt has been the chair of the Kinesiology
Department at Greensboro College, a post he has held since 2003. He
arrived at Greensboro College in 1991, and became chair of the
College’s Division of Education four years later. He then was
selected chair of the physical education department and eventually
chair of the kinesiology division. Hunt is also certified with the
National Strength and Conditioning Association.
As a student-athlete Hunt was a four-year member (1971-74) of the
Glenville State College football team. A three-year starter, he
helped lead the 1973 squad to an NAIA national runner-up
finish.
After receiving his bachelors degree from Glenville State in 1975,
he earned a Master of Science degree from West Virginia University.
He later completed a Doctorate of Physical Education, also at WVU,
in 1984. Dr. Hunt completed post-doctorate work in health education
in 1991 at West Virginia.
Hunt’s first foray into football head coaching was at
Preston County (W.V.) High School from 1977-81. He also served as
the team’s strength coach, which has become one of his areas
of expertise.
Dr. Hunt then joined his alma mater under head coach Frank Vincent
from 1981-84. He served as Glenville’s defensive coordinator,
assistant head coach, and strength coach. (The first of two times
in that role). Hunt then served as Glenville’s interim head
coach in 1984.
Dr. Hunt was promoted to associate professor of physical education
and left football for five years. He was lured back to coaching at
Gilmer County High School (1989-90). His alma mater then called him
back for his second stint as defensive coordinator, where he served
under Rodriguez in 1990-91.
Dr. Hunt resides in Greensboro with his wife Shelley. They have
three children: Kasey, Tanner and Sean.
