Men's Soccer Preview (10/3-10/9)

The Pride men's soccer team will look to get back on track this week with home games against Ferrum and Piedmont.  Greensboro will host Ferrum on Wednesday in its second home game of the season followed by another home date on Saturday with Piedmont.  The Pride enter the week at 1-4-3 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.  Greensboro is paced offensively by senior Joe Peluso's six points.  Peluso has three goals on the season, two of which came against cross-town rival Guilford last week.

Upcoming Fixtures

Wednesday, October 5 vs. Ferrum (4:00 PM) - Ferrum comes into Wednesday's showdown with a record of 2-7-2 overall and 0-1 in the USA South.  The Panthers have not earned a win since beating Randolph-Macon 1-0 on September 11.  Despite its struggles, Ferrum has been competitive, including a recent heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to #3 nationally ranked Christopher Newport.  The Captains of CNU broke a scoreless tie with 14 minutes to play to come away with the road win. 

The Panthers have been outscored on the season by an average margin of 2.00-0.73.  Opponents are firing a shot on goal percentage of .452 while Ferrum is converting at a clip of .415.  Asa Fox has a team leading seven points on the season with three goals and one assist.  Teammate Eddy Funes is close behind with six points on two goals and two assists.  Three different keepers have recorded a decision on the season with Justin Robinson earning the most starts with five.

Last season, The Pride played Ferrum to a 1-1 tie.  Greensboro struck early on a Chris Davis goal in the third minute of the game.  The Panthers answered the call with a converted penalty kick in the 25th minute.  Neither team could find the net for the remainder of regulation and two overtimes as the game ended deadlocked.

Saturday, October 8 vs. Piedmont (1:00 PM) - After splitting a pair contests in the previous two years, Piedmont comes to town for a grudge match.  The Lions are 3-5-1 on the year with a game against Tocoa Falls on the slate for Wednesday.  Piedmont is riding a two game unbeaten streak, with a 4-1 win over LaGrange on September and a 2-2 against Huntingdon on October 1.

Opponents are outscoring the Lions 2.78-1.89 and have an on goal percentage of .522 compared to .485 for Piedmont.  Sydney Smith leads the offense with six goals and one assist for a team high 13 points.  Nick Weatherby (two goals, three assists) and Justin Whitaker (three goals and one assist) are tied for second in points with seven each.  Brian Gaid has earned the decision in every game this season and has made 69 saves for a save percentage of .742.

The Lions earned a 1-0 home win over Greensboro last season.  Smith provided the game winner in the 54th minute on an assist by Weatherby.  The Pride were outshot 5-3 on goal and 5-3 overall.  Woody Wilder took the loss in goal for Greensboro despite making four saves.
