Dirk Fennie enters his third season coaching the Greensboro
College golf team in 2011-12. He was hired as head golf
coach/assistant director of athletic communications in April
2009. In 2011-12, Fennie will lead the new Pride women's golf
team.
In just his second year on the job, Fennie coached the storied
program to its second NCAA Division III National
Championship. Behind the efforts of three All-Americans, The
Pride pulled away for a six stroke victory at the Grandover Resort
in Greensboro, NC.
For the season, GC took home three tournament titles and
finished third at the USA South Conference Championship. In
recognition of his success, Fennie won the Dave Williams Award
honoring the National Coach of the Year.
During his first season with The Pride, Fennie led the team to as
high as number two in the national rankings. GC won its first
tournament since the 2004-05 season, winning the Pine Needles
Intercollegiate. At the Emory Spring Invitational, Fennie led his
team to another victory by defeating #1 Methodist; The Pride were
the only DIII team to beat the Monarchs in 2009-10.
In 2010, Greensboro College golf competed in its first NCAA
Championship since 2005 with Fennie at the helm. Led by Second Team
All American Ben Niahrt, GC placed 11th at the NCAAs.
Prior to arriving at GC, Fennie had been a volunteer assistant to
GCAA Hall of Fame coach Jack Jensen at Guilford
As a player, Fennie is the 1999 North Carolina Amateur Champion. He
also represented North Carolina at several Tar Heel Cup, and
Carolina-Virginias team matches. Fennie has played in two US
Amateur championships, two US Mid Amateurs, two US Public Links
Amateurs (2004 Quarterfinalist), a US Junior Amateur, and the
British Mid-Amateur.
Fennie played at Campbell University for two years where he was the
Big South Conference medalist, conference player of the year,
two-time all conference, team MVP, and was winner of three DI
tournaments in a one-month span.
He then spent the last two years playing at the University of
Colorado for GCAA Hall of Fame coach Mark Simpson, helping the
Buffaloes to two NCAA regionals. As a player, Fennie also
worked with legendary sports psychologist Dr. Bob Rotella from the
University of Virginia.
A native of Ridgewood, N.J., Fennie's family has strong roots in
the golf community. His father served as a USGA Committee member
and two-time US Senior Open general chairman. His brother has owned
Golf USA in Greensboro since 1989. Fennie has worked professionally
in sales (Golf USA, Cleveland Golf, Reebok Intl., Edelweiss Ski
Haus and the Great Outdoor Provision Co.).
Fennie was also a partner in a real estate development/rental
company at Emerald Isle for seven years with his wife Deborah. They
have a daughter, Meredith.
Fennie serves as volunteer rules official for the Carolinas Golf
Association, and has helped with the first tee program in
Greensboro. His other interests are endurance mountain bike racing
(including the 24 hour variety) and snow skiing.
