Ian Spooner enters his fourth year leading the Greensboro
College women's soccer program in 2011. He was named head coach in
May, 2008.
In 2010, Spooner led The Pride to a record of 12-6-1 including an
appearance in the USA South Athletic Conference semifinals.
Overall, eight GC players were selected to the All-Conference
squad.
The 2009 team finished with a 10-8-2 record, good
for third in the USA South regular season, and also reached
the conference tournament semifinals. In Spooner's first year
(2008), The Pride finished with an 8-8-3 mark.
Prior to GC, Spooner had been employed by the Greensboro Soccer
Association since 2006, holding the titles of Director of Player
Development and Assistant Director of Coaching.
Spooner was selected as the first-ever head women’s soccer
coach at NCAA Division III Bridgewater College (VA), and in two
seasons of competition recorded an impressive 21-11-1. He also
simultaneously coached the Bridgewater men’s soccer team for
two years before returning to his alma mater in 2001 to become the
first assistant for the Highlander women’s soccer program. He
became the technical director for the Roanoke Valley Youth Soccer
Club in 2004, and was the State Head Coach for the Olympic
Development Program.
Spooner has more than 15 years of coaching experience, Coach
Spooner holds the NSCAA premier diploma and the USSF B license, and
has been invited to join the North Carolina Youth Soccer
Association coaching education staff as an instructor for state
level coaching education courses.
Spooner holds a career women's soccer coaching record of 51-33-7 in
five seasons.
A native of Oxford, England Spooner played intercollegiate soccer
at Radford University (VA) where he was a 4-time first team
all-conference player. He was also named Big South Conference MVP
in his final two seasons. After graduation, he played
professionally for six years in the United Soccer League (USL).
Spooner lives in Greensboro with his wife Kathyrn and sons Caden,
Rhys, Calum, and Dylan.
