Greensboro returns five players - all sophomores- from a squad that posted a 27-9 overall record last season. In addition, The Pride will welcome four freshmen to the fold, making Greensboro the youngest team in the USA South.
Simpson, meanwhile, gives The Pride a defensive specialist at the libero position where she recorded a team high 546 digs. Simpson will team up with Cates to provide Greensboro with one of the top defenses in the conference. Cates added 198 digs and also provided an offensive spark with 44 serving aces.
The first opponent of the weekend, Emory & Henry, is coming off of a 10-17 season in 2010. Kim Caudill and Nicole Tesh are the top offensive returners in terms of kills. Tesh posted a team leading 246 kills with Caudill following with 237. Selena Trichel is the key returner on defense after pacing the team with 385 digs.
Southern Virginia finished last year with a 15-18 overall showing. Shyanne Ison is the leading returner in kills with 262 while Nicole Gwynn handles the libero duties with a team best 392 digs. Ison, Gwynn and middle blocker Tori Tuttle are the lone returners with over 100 sets of experience under the belts.
Saturday's opening match will pit The Pride against a Roanoke team that went 21-7 last year. On offense, the Maroons will welcome back Kylie Lucas who finished second on the team with 244 kills. Kelsey Largen is the top returning defender with 230 digs while Shannon Stone and Bren Wilberger give Roanoke two setters with more than 400 assists.
The final opponent of the weekend is Washington & Lee, who turned in a strong 28-7 performance in 2010. The Generals welcome back their top three leaders in kills. M.A. Boles provides the primary spark with a team high 424 kills while Megan Daily had 260 and Lindsey Dee added 251. The attackers will be fed once again by setter Meghan Meleski, who offered up a team best 716 assists. In addition, the team's leading defender, Cameron Hill also returns after posting 540 digs.

The Greensboro College volleyball team will kick off its 2011 campaign this weekend at the Averett University Tournament. The Pride will face Emory & Henry and Southern Virginia at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Friday before concluding the weekend against Washington & Lee and Roanoke at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Dana Sandknop, Danielle Simpson and Siarra Cates provide the most experience on the team as each player appeared in over 113 of the 126 sets played in 2010.
