The Greensboro College volleyball team swept Mary Baldwin but was eliminated by host Christopher Newport in USA South tournament action on Tuesday. The Pride came ready to play in the first round, knocking off the Fighting Squirrels, 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-21). However, top seed Christopher Newport was too hot for Greensboro to handle in a 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-8) setback.
Greensboro found themselves trailing 17-15 in the first set against Mary Baldwin before a six point streak turned the table. The Pride used the momentum to pull within game point at 24-20 and finished it out the 25-22 win with a kill by Liz Widenhouse.
Greensboro took control of the second set early, racing out to leads of 7-2, 12-4 and 20-12 en route to the 25-16 victory. The Pride used a key 7-2 run in set three to pull away from close 10-8 lead. The Fighting Squirrels fought back, though, climbing to within 24-21 when Heather Taylor (pictured) wrapped up the match with a kill.
Widenhouse paced the Greensboro attack with 13 kills in 40 attempts while Heather Taylor chipped in eight kills in 19 tries. Dana Sandknop dished out 29 assists and Danielle Simpson tallied a team leading 18 digs.
The Pride hit .213 for the match, picked up 47 digs and had 2.0 team blocks. Defensively, Greensboro limited Mary Baldwin to a .075 hitting percentage and did not hit into a single block.
Greensboro hung tough early against the Captains of Christopher Newport in the second match of the night. The Pride trailed just 9-7 in set one before a Captain streak extended the decifit to 21-9. Christopher Newport steadily padded the lead throughout set two to take a 2-0 advantage with a 25-15 win and finished off Greensboro with a 25-8 win in the final set.
The Pride finish their 2011 campaign with an overall record of 11-24.
